Over the years that the first iPhone has been revealed to the public, Steve Jobs has somehow managed to put his product on top. Until now, it enjoys its status as the premier smartphone in the mobile market. As a matter of fact, this smartphone is more saleable than a pocket pc. And over the years, major manufacturers around the globe have also presented their devices with their desire to compete with Apple’s iPhone . However, the design of the iPhone has stayed the same on all its three variants. This gives the wonder on how it has dealt with its competitors in order not be surpassed by them. With the release of the new iPhone 4, it was proven once again that it is on top.
One of iPhone 4’s toughest competitors is HTC’s HD2. Compared to iPhone 4’s display capacity which is at 3.5 inches only, HD2 has a capacitive screen of 4.2 inches. Like the new iPhone, HD2 boasts of its 5 megapixel camera. iPhone 4 has surpassed HD2’s snapdragon processor which is at 1 GHZ only whereas its processor is at 1.2 GHZ. HD2 has been plugged to be the smartphone that would kill the iPhone 4. However, its operating system which is Windows Mobile brings itself as the second placer. Windows Mobile usually crashes which uncommonly happens with an iPhone.
Google’s Nexus One which was inspired and based on the Android, is also a strong competitor of the iPhone. It runs the superfast Android Eclair 2.1 Operating System and its screen capacity is also bigger than the iPhone by a .2 inch. Thus, one can say that Nexus One is really a great buy. However, nothing distinguishes the phone from all the other smartphones available in the market because all its features can also be found in the other smartphones. Distinction is an important factor. In order for something to be fully recognized, it has to stand out.
Motorola has also introduced their flagship device that can beat the iPhone, the Motorola Milestone or also known as the Droid. It is almost similar to Nexus One but its QWERTY keyboard made it recognizable. The keyboard does not suit well to the people with big fingers though.
Nokia’s N900 could have toppled the smartphone charts by chance because it is the competitor with the closest features with the iPhone but due to its bulkiness, iPhone still reigned. Another problem is that unlike the iPhone 4, you can hardly find applications for N900.
With Samsung’s Omnia HD, the mistakewas that Samsung decided to use the Symbian OS 5. The operating system was never designed and meant for touch screen gadgets thus, making the phone slow. Compared to Blackberry’s Storm 2, it is still way behind the race. Storm 2 is very fast and snappy. However, Blackberry phones are known for business use. While the iPhone 4 is very much flexible.
The newest touted iPhone killer is Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10. It boasts a 4 inch display screen and an 8 megapixel camera with a LED flash which is way incomparable with the iPhone 4. However, the disappointment is that it runs on Android 1.6 OS.
